Various embodiments of the present invention relate to an apparatus and a method by which an electronic device of a wireless LAN system performs a security association (SA) query. The electronic device comprises: a communication circuit that supports a wireless LAN communication method; and a processor, wherein the processor may: connect to an external electronic device by communication via the communication circuit; acquire, from the external electronic device, information related to a point in time of activation of the external electronic device; when receiving a management frame related to the external electronic device via the communication circuit, identify an operation state of the external electronic device on the basis of the information related to the point in time of activation of the external electronic device; and transmit, on the basis of the operation state of the external electronic device, a request frame related to the identification of a security state with the external electronic device.
