Summary:A sphygmomanometer and a method for operating same are disclosed. The disclosed sphygmomanometer comprises: a cuff capable of being wrapped around a blood pressure measurement target area; a cuff sheet located on the outside of the cuff and constraining outward inflation during cuff inflation; a cuff support located on the outside of the cuff and supporting the cuff and the blood pressure measurement target area; a cuff seat movement unit that adjusts the diameter of the cuff sheet by pulling or pushing both ends of the cuff sheet; a sensor for detecting pressure inside the cuff; and a processor for determining a blood pressure value on the basis of information about the pressure detected by the sensor. When both ends of the cuff sheet are pulled within a predetermined difference by the cuff sheet movement unit in order to measure blood pressure, the cuff compresses the blood pressure measurement target area while a force to rotate the blood pressure measurement target area is less than or equal to a predetermined magnitude.
