A multicore optical fiber (1) is provided with a pair of cores (10) and a cladding (20) covering both of the pair of cores (10). The cladding has a diameter of 124 μm to 126 m inclusive. The center-to-center distance of the pair of cores is less than or equal to 46.5 μm. The crosstalk between opposing propagation cores at the wavelength 1550 nm is less than or equal to -30 dB/100 km.
