A method for inverse tone mapping comprising: obtaining (41) an histogram of a low dynamic range image, called LDR image; obtaining (42) an ITMO function, allowing obtaining a pixel value of a High Dynamic Range image, called HDR image, from a pixel value of the LDR image and a gain function depending on said pixel value of the LDR image; applying a search process using the obtained histogram to identify areas of the LDR image producing bright areas in the HDR image when the ITMO function is applied on said LDR image, using information representative of the bright areas to determine when modifying the gain function to insure the HDR image respects at least one predefined light energy constraint. La présente invention concerne un procédé de mise en correspondance inverse de tonalités comprenant les étapes consistant à : obtenir (41) un histogramme d'une image à faible plage dynamique, appelée image LDR ; obtenir (42) une fonction ITMO, permettant d'obtenir une valeur de pixel d'une image à plage dynamique élevée, appelée image HDR, à partir d'une valeur de pixel de l'image LDR et d'une fonction de gain selon ladite valeur de pixel de l'image LDR ; appliquer un processus de recherche à l'aide de l'histogramme obtenu pour identifier des zones de l'image LDR produisant des zones brillantes dans l'image HDR lorsque la fonction ITMO est appliquée sur ladite image LDR, en utilisant des informations représentatives des zones brillantes pour déterminer quand modifier la fonction de gain pour assurer que l'image HDR respecte au moins une contrainte prédéfinie d'énergie lumineuse.
