A shape memory composite can, in one example, include a shape memory material to bend along a fold region in response to a phase change in the shape memory material from a first phase to a second phase. A mechanochromic marking can be deposited on a surface of the shape memory material at the fold region. The mechanochromic marking can change color along the fold region in response to the bending of the shape memory material.
