A method for processing an input video signal intended for a first display to produce an output signal appropriate for a second display comprises converting using one or more transfer functions. The transfer functions are arranged to provide relative scene light values to then remove or apply rendering intent. The rendering intent being the rendering intent of the input signal or rendering intent for the output signal. The removing or applying the rendering intent alters the luminance. Significantly, the conversion is arranged to alter the luminance but not colour components so that colour is unchanged.
