The present invention relates generally to images. More particularly, an embodiment of the present invention relates to the pixel group segmented quantization and de-quantization of the residual signal in layered coding of high dynamic range images. By assigning the pixels in the residual image to different pixel groups based on the pixel value of the corresponding pixel in the decoded base layer signal, and by applying pixel group quantizing functions to assigned pixels a more efficient coding can be achieved. La présente invention porte de manière générale sur des images. Plus particulièrement, un mode de réalisation de la présente invention concerne la quantification segmentée de groupes de pixels et la dé-quantification du signal résiduel dans un codage en couches d'images à plage dynamique étendue. En attribuant les pixels situés dans l'image résiduelle à différents groupes de pixels en se basant sur la valeur de pixel du pixel correspondant dans le signal de la couche de base décodée, et en appliquant des fonctions de quantification de groupes de pixels à des pixels attribués, il est possible d'obtenir un codage plus efficace.
