Disclosed are a communication terminal using a common protocol, a control method thereof, a recording medium in which a program for executing the control method is recorded, and an application stored on a medium for executing the control method in combination with hardware. The control method of a communication terminal that communicates with an external apparatus, according to the present invention, comprises the steps of: generating a sub-protocol packet for controlling the external apparatus; determining the size of the sub-protocol packet; and generating a common protocol packet for communicating with the external apparatus, wherein the common protocol packet includes a start field indicating the start of the packet, an index field assigning the order of the packet, a size field including the size of the determined sub-protocol packet, a message field including the sub-protocol packet, and an end field indicating the end of the packet.
