Provided is a collision energy absorption device configured so that reinforcement fibers are sufficiently destroyed during a collision to thereby provide consistent and highly efficient energy absorption. A collision energy absorption device (10) for a railway vehicle (1) is provided with: an absorption body (15) formed from a fiber-reinforced resin and disposed extending in the rail direction; a base member (11) for supporting the rear end (15a), in the rail direction, of the absorption body (15); a front plate member (20) disposed facing the front end (15b) of the absorption body (15) from the front without being affixed to the front end (15b) of the absorption body (15); and a holding device (30) for positioning the front plate member (20) so that the front plate member (20) faces the front end (15b) of the absorption body (15) from the front.
