A method for analyzing a surface of a specular substrate (2), comprising: - acquiring at least one image of a test pattern (10) produced by reflection from said surface, the test pattern including a periodic array of dark and light zones; - calculating the derivative of the local phase in one direction at points of the image from the image acquired; - calculating quantities representative of local enlargements in one direction at points of the image from the derivative of the phase; - calculating local optical powers from said quantities representative of local enlargements; and - calculating an altitude profile from the local optical powers. Procédé d'analyse d'une surface d'un substrat spéculaire (2) comprenant : - une acquisition d'au moins une image d'une mire (10) produite par réflexion sur ladite surface, la mire présentant un motif périodique de zones sombres et claires; - un calcul de la dérivée de la phase locale dans une direction en des points de l'image à partir de l'image acquise; - un calcul de grandeurs représentatives de grandissements locaux dans une direction en des points de l'image à partir de la dérivée de la phase; - un calcul de puissances optiques locales à partir desdites grandeurs représentatives de grandissements locaux; - un calcul de profil d'altitude à partir des puissances optiques locales.
