La présente invention concerne une masse fibreuse à base d'alumine qui a une tension superficielle élevée et qui est applicable à des matériaux de support pour des dispositifs de purification de gaz d'échappement et un procédé pour la production de la masse fibreuse à base d'alumine. La masse fibreuse à base d'alumine a une composition chimique contenant de 70 à 90 %, à l'exclusion de 90 %, de Al2O3 et a un volume de pores total de 0,0055 ml/g ou moins.
