Summary:Coated articles are provided comprising: (a) a substrate; (b) a porous sol-gel layer superimposed on at least one surface of the substrate; wherein the porous sol-gel layer comprises a hydrolyzed tetraalkoxysilane; and (c) a sealant layer superimposed on at least one surface of the porous sol-gel layer; wherein the sealant layer comprises an alkyltrihalosilane. The coated articles demonstrate superior abrasion resistance due to a glass-like layer formed from the combination of the porous sol-gel layer and sealant layer. Les articles revêtus selon l'invention comprennent : (a) un substrat; (b) une couche sol-gel poreuse formée sur au moins une surface du substrat, la couche sol-gel poreuse comprenant un tétraalcoxysilane hydrolysé; et (c) une couche d'étanchéité formée sur au moins une surface de la couche sol-gel poreuse, la couche d'étanchéité comprenant un alkyltrihalosilane. Les articles revêtus selon l'invention font preuve d'une résistance à l'abrasion supérieure due à la couche vitreuse formée par la combinaison de la couche sol-gel poreuse et de la couche d'étanchéité.
