Summary: | A method for detecting respiratory cycle characteristics of a patient wearing a respiratory assistance mask comprises: - acquiring (20) sampled respiratory rate digital data at a predetermined acquisition frequency, thus defining a time-based rate curve; - defining (22) a size of a sliding time window for the rate; - predetermining (24) a pseudo-derivative by: for each sliding window, searching (26) for the maximum and minimum rates within the sliding window, and predetermining (28) the pseudo-derivative from the found maximum and minimum, the pseudo-derivative being defined as the difference between the found maximum and minimum, the pseudo-derivative being positive if the maximum appears after the minimum, and otherwise being negative; - moving (30) the sliding window toward the next rate sample; - detecting (32) a rate plateau when the pseudo-derivative is, as an absolute value, less than a predetermined value.
