An example sentence selection unit (444) selects an example sentence from a template database (422) in accordance with an instruction received by an input unit (410).  A translated sentence output unit (446) displays on a display unit (462), the example sentence selected by the example sentence selection unit (444) and the translated sentence of the example sentence.  Furthermore, the translated sentence output unit (446) displays on the display unit (462), a specification symbol specifying a variable portion while correlating the variable portion with a variable portion in the example sentence selected by the example sentence selection unit (444).  Moreover, when the input unit (410) receives a character input corresponding to the specification symbol, the translated sentence output unit (446) displays on the display unit (462), a word candidate which can replace the variable portion corresponding to the inputted character.
