Abstract | An exhaust emission purifier which can perform fuel addition to an exhaust purification catalyst quickly when it is requested while suppressing overheat of the exhaust purification catalyst. The exhaust emission purifier of an internal combustion engine comprises an exhaust purification catalyst (8) for purifying exhaust emission of the internal combustion engine (1), and a valve (10) for adding fuel from the upstream of the exhaust purification catalyst (8), wherein a period combining the interval for adding fuel from the fuel addition valve (10) with a pause interval for stopping fuel addition is repeated in order to control the exhaust purification catalyst (8) to a target temperature, and the fuel addition valve (10) is operated such that the pause intervals are provided to sandwich the addition interval between them in the period. Length of the pause interval provided before the addition interval is altered depending on the temperature of the exhaust purification catalyst (8) at the start point (P1) of the period.
