A process for making a colored article of manufacture is disclosed. Accordingly an article of manufacture is first prepared of a material selected from the group consisting of metal, wood, glass, ceramic, masonry and polymeric materials. A polymeric coating (superstrate) is then applied to at least a portion of the surface of the article. At least a portion of the superstrate is brought into contact with a material system that contains (i) water, (ii) a carrier, (iii) a dye and (iv) a diol, under conditions calculated to bring about diffusion of said dye into said superstrate. La présente invention concerne un procédé permettant d'obtenir un article manufacturé coloré. Ainsi, on commence par préparer un article manufacturé à partir d'un matériau sélectionné dans le groupe constitué par des matériaux métalliques, en bois, en verre, en céramique, de maçonnerie et polymères. Puis, on applique un revêtement polymère (superstrat) sur une partie au moins de la surface de l'article. Une partie au moins du superstrat vient au contact d'un système de matériaux qui contient (i) de l'eau, (ii) un porteur, (iii) un colorant et (iv) un diol, dans des conditions calculées pour parvenir à la diffusion dudit colorant dans ledit superstrat.
