In a method and apparatus for mechanically fastening a partially assembled absorbent undergarment during manufacture, a longitudinal folding device is carried by a transport device and moveable between an open configuration in which it receives a partially assembled undergarment, and a closed configuration in which the undergarment is folded longitudinally by the folding device. A first transverse folding device folds a first fastening portion of the undergarment relative to the folding device and generally toward a second fastening portion, and a second transverse folding device carried by the transport device folds the second fastening portion relative to the folding device and generally toward the first fastening portion to facilitate engagement therebetween. A separate retention member is carried by the transport device and draws at least one of the first and second fastening portions against the retention member while the garment is moved by the transport device. La présente invention concerne un procédé et un appareil de fermeture mécanique lors de sa fabrication, d'un sous-vêtement absorbant partiellement assemblé ; un dispositif de pliage longitudinal est transporté par un dispositif de transport et on peut le changer d'une configuration ouverte dans laquelle il reçoit un sous-vêtement partiellement assemblé, à une configuration fermée dans laquelle le sous-vêtement est plié longitudinalement par le dispositif de pliage. Un premier dispositif de pliage transversal plie une première portion d'attache du sous-vêtement relativement au dispositif de pliage et généralement vers une seconde portion d'attache, et un second dispositif similaire transporté par le dispositif de transport plie la seconde portion relativement au dispositif de pliage et généralement vers la première portion d'attache, afin de faciliter l'engagement entre elles. Un membre de rétention séparé est transporté par le dispositif de transport et tire au moins une des deux portions d'attache contre lui pendant que le sous-vêtement est déplacé par le dispositif de transport.
