The present invention is a method for the production of propylene glycol that includes fractionating a carbohydrate material into at least a first fraction and a second fraction. The method further includes the steps of processing the first fraction to generate a hydrogen product and processing the second fraction to generate a carbohydrate product. The hydrogen product and the carbohydrate product can then be reacted to form a reaction mixture including propylene glycol. The method of the present invention also includes separating propylene glycol from the reaction mixture. L'invention porte sur un procédé de production de propylène glycol qui consiste à fractionner une substance de carbohydrate en au moins une première fraction et une deuxième fraction. Le procédé consiste ensuite à traiter la première fraction pour générer un produit d'hydrogène et à traiter la deuxième fraction pour générer un produit de carbohydrate. Le produit d'hydrogène et le produit de carbohydrate peuvent ensuite être mis en réaction pour former un mélange réactif contenant du propylène glycol. Le procédé de l'invention consiste également à séparer le propylène glycol du mélange réactif.
