A projection objective of a microlithographic projection exposure apparatus comprises a manipulator (M; M') for reducing rotationally asymmetric image errors. The manipulator in turn contains a lens (52; 52') , an optical element (50; 50') and an interspace (54; 54') formed between the lens (52; 52') and the optical element (50; 50'), which can be filled with a liquid (62). At least one actuator (711 to 718) acting exclusively on the lens (52; 52') is furthermore provided, which can generate a rotationally asymmetric deformation of the lens.
