Summary:Methods and apparatus for implementing and using portable devices are described. Various features are directed to the physical design of the portable device and the size and number of keys, e.g., with less than 10 keys in total being used in some embodiments. The design is well suited for supporting an intuitive user interface of the invention and is intended to be easy to use by ordinary individuals as well as those which may suffer physical impairments. An exemplary simple and intuitive user interface is described. Methods of updating device functionality and data using text messages in accordance with the invention are also described. L'invention concerne des procédés et un appareil qui permettent la mise en oeuvre et l'utilisation de dispositifs portables. Divers aspects de l'invention portent sur la conception physique du dispositif portable et sur la taille et le nombre de touches, moins de 10 touches au total, par exemple, étant utilisées dans certains modes de réalisation. Le modèle de l'invention est particulièrement apte à accueillir une interface utilisateur intuitive de l'invention, et est facile d'emploi tant pour les personnes ordinaires que pour les personnes souffrant de handicaps physiques.
