Summary:The invention relates to a method for preparing amino-alcohols and alcohols in a simple and low-cost manner by directly reducing amino-acids, carboxylic acids and corresponding esters with the aid of a novel nondangerous reducing entity embodied in the form of a halogenozinc borohydride of formula ZnXBH4, wherein X is Cl, Br, I or F. The inventive reducing entity can be pre-prepared or formed in situ. The inventive method consists in forming an (amino-alcohol or alcohol)/borane complex by a reducing reaction and, afterwards in hydrolysing said complex in such a way that the desired amino-alcohol or alcohol is obtainable.
