A polarizer comprised of a film having such a structure that microregions (3) are dispersed in a matrix formed from light transmitting water-soluble resin (1) containing iodide base light absorber (2a) and a divalent metal. The divalent metal is characterized by containing zinc and/or nickel, and the microregions (3) are formed from an oriented birefringent material. This iodide base polarizer realizes a high polarization degree even on the short wavelength side and excels in durability. L'invention concerne un polariseur constitué d'un film dont la structure présente des microrégions (3), dispersées dans une matrice faite d'une résine (1) soluble dans l'eau, transmettant la lumière et qui contient un absorbeur (2a) de lumière à base d'iodure et un métal divalent. Le métal divalent est caractérisé en ce qu'il contient du zinc et/ou du nickel, et les microrégions (3) sont faites d'une matière biréfringente orientée. Le polariseur à base d'iodure présente un degré de polarisation élevé, même du côté longueur d'onde courte, et une très bonne durabilité.
