A detection system for detecting a dangerous condition for an operator using a power tool of the type which has an exposed blade relative to a work surface and a protection system for minimizing, if not eliminating the possibility of a user being injured by contacting the blade. In one preferred embodiment of the present invention, a proximity detection system is capable of detecting the presence of a user near the blade of a table saw and a protection system that can either retract the blade below the work surface of the table saw or terminate the drive torque to the blade which can result in rapid stopping of the saw blade by a work piece that is being cut. L'invention concerne un système de détection destiné à détecter une situation dangereuse pour un opérateur utilisant une machine outil du type possédant une lame à découvert par rapport à une surface de travail, ainsi qu'un système de protection destiné à réduire au maximum, ou à éliminer, la possibilité qu'un utilisateur soit blessé par un contact avec la lame. Dans un mode de réalisation préféré de cette invention, un système de détection de proximité peut détecter la présence d'un utilisateur proche de la lame d'une table de sciage, ainsi qu'un système de protection pouvant soit rétracter la lame en dessous de la surface de travail de la table de sciage, soit arrêter le couple d'entraînement vers la lame, ce qui a pour résultat l'arrêt rapide de la lame de sciage par une pièce en train d'être coupée.
