A thin film forming apparatus comprising first and second electrodes and a gas supply portion is disclosed. Discharge surfaces of the first and second electrodes are opposite to each other so as to form a discharge space where a high frequency electric field is generated. The gas supply portion supplies a gas containing a thin film forming gas into the discharge space so that the gas is activated by the high frequency electric field and a thin film is formed on a base material by exposing the base material to the activated gas. The thin film forming apparatus also comprises a film carrying mechanism for carrying a cleaning film which prevents at least one of the first and second electrodes from being exposed to the activated gas. The film carrying mechanism carries the cleaning film so that the film is in close contact with the discharge surface of at least one of the first and second electrodes and at least a part of other surface continued to the discharge surface. Cette invention concerne un dispositif de fabrication de films minces, comprenant une première et une seconde électrodes et une partie alimentation en gaz. Les surfaces de décharge des première et des seconde électrodes, qui se font face, forment un espace de décharge dans lequel se produit un champ électrique à haute fréquence. La partie alimentation en gaz introduit dans l'espace de décharge un gaz de formation de film mince de telle sorte que ce gaz est activé par le champ électrique haute fréquence et qu'un film mince est formé sur le matériau de base exposé au gaz activé. Le dispositif de formation de film mince comprend également un mécanisme transporteur de film acheminant un film de nettoyage destiné à empêcher au moins une des première et seconde électrodes d'être exposée au gaz activé. Le mécanisme transporteur de film amène le film de nettoyage en contact étroit avec la surface de nettoyage d'au moins une des première et deuxième électrodes et au moins une partie de l'autre surface jouxtant cette surface de décharge.-
