The present invention provides methods of extracting nucleic acids from environmental samples, such as terrestrial soil. The methods involve washing intact microbes from the sample such that humic acid is removed from the sample before the cells are broken and their contents released into the sample. Higher yields and more highly purified nucleic acids are obtainable from environmental samples according to the methods.
