Summary:An elevator, comprising a car (1) stored in a hoistway and a hoist (4) installed at the lower part of the hoistway allowing the car (1) to lift therein, wherein the car (1) is lifted by a rope (2) applied to a pulley (5), a counterbalance weight (13) is installed to keep a balance with the car (1), the cross section of the pulley (5) is not overlapped with the cross section of the counterbalance weight (13) in the hoistway in longitudinal and lateral directions, and the rope (2) is passed through a space formed between a space for the counterbalance weight (13) formed by vertically extending the cross section of the counterbalance weight (13) and the space of the hoistway for the car (1), whereby the area occupied by the elevator can be reduced. An elevator, comprising a car 1 stored in a hoistway and a hoist 4 installed at the lower part of the hoistway allowing the car 1 to lift therein, wherein the car 1 is lifted by a rope 2 applied to a pulley 5, a counterbalance weight 13 is installed to keep a balance with the car 1, the cross section of the pulley 5 is not overlapped with the cross section of the counterbalance weight 13 in the hoistway in longitudinal and lateral directions, and the rope 2 is passed through a space formed between a space for the counterbalance weight 13 formed by vertically extending the cross section of the counterbalance weight 13 and the space of the hoistway for the car 1, whereby the area occupied by the elevator can be reduced.
