Summary:A digital still camera including a coding data quantity monitoring circuit (9). The monitoring circuit (9) senses a data quantity of an image signal compressed by a JPEG compression circuit (7). When a CPU (10) determines that the data quantity sensed by the coding data quantity monitoring circuit (9) is equal to or more than the maximum coding data quantity S, firstly, the object is again imaged by an image pickup element (3) to output another image signal so as to modify a quantization table used in a quantization circuit (21). Next, the image data is DCT−converted by a DCT circuit (20), quantized by the quantization circuit (21), and coded by a coding circuit (22), thereby being compressed. Another image signal compressed is recorded on a memory card (13). Here, the image signal is recorded in an area where an image signal is recorded in advance on the memory card (13).
