Summary:A liquid crystal display device which is thin and small in area, and the frame of which is narrow, and an electronic apparatus comprising it. This liquid crystal display device has a first substrate (16), a pixel section (12) formed on the first substrate (16) and having pixels arranged in a matrix, a second substrate (62) opposed to the first substrate (16), a liquid crystal composition (63) retained between the first substrate (16) and the second substrate (62), and peripheral circuits for writing a pixel signal in the pixel section (12) provided on the first substrate (16). At least a part of the peripheral circuits (13) of the peripheral circuits is formed of a thin-film transistor on the first substrate (16), and the other peripheral circuits (23, 24, 25) of the peripheral circuits are formed of semiconductor chips. The semiconductor chips are arranged on the first substrate (16) so that at least a part of the semiconductor chips may superpose on the region of the peripheral circuits formed of the thin-film transistors. La présente invention concerne un afficheur à cristaux liquides fin, de petite superficie, à cadre étroit, et un appareil électronique pourvu de cet afficheur. L'afficheur à cristaux liquides est constitué d'un premier substrat (16) sur lequel est formée la matrice à pixels (12), et d'un second substrat (62) en opposition au premier substrat (16). Une composition de cristal liquide (63) est prise en sandwich entre les deux substrats (16, 62). La matrice (12) est entourée de circuits commandant les signaux d'activation des pixels sur le premier substrat (16). Une partie au moins de ces circuits de commande (13) est faite d'un transistor à film mince sur le premier substrat, les autres circuits de commande (23, 24, 25) étant réalisés à base de microcircuits de semi-conducteurs. Ces microcircuits de semi-conducteurs sont agencés sur le premier substrat (16) de façon qu'une partie au moins d'entre eux puissent se superposer sur la zone des circuits de commande faits de transistors à film mince.
