After excavation, the oil or bitumen is separated from the sand or mineral matter which is disposed of in the tunnel by backfilling a portion (108). An access tunnel (109) remains open. The tunneling machine also includes movable shields and processing equipment. L'invention concerne des dispositifs et des procédés pour excaver des matières précieuses, notamment du grès asphaltique ou du schiste à pyrobitume. Le tunnelier (100, 105) excave la matière (103) du sous-sol. Après l'excavation, le pétrole ou le bitume est séparé du grès ou de la matière minérale se trouvant dans le tunnel, par remplissage par remblayage d'une partie (108). Un tunnel d'accès (109) reste ouvert. Le tunnelier comprend également des écrans et un équipement de traitement mobiles.
