Controlled release devices are disclosed which are biocompatible and can be implanted into the eye. The devices have a core comprising a drug and a polymeric outer layer which is substantially impermeable to the entrance of an environmental fluid and substantially impermeable to the release of the drug during a delivery period, and drug release is affected through an orifice in the outer layer. These devices have an orifice area of less than 10 % of the total surface area of the device and can be used to deliver a variety of drugs with varying degrees of solubility and or molecular weight. Methods are also provided for using these drug delivery devices. L'invention concerne des dispositifs à libération contrôlée biocompatibles et pouvant être implantés dans l'oeil. Ces dispositifs possèdent un noyau composé d'un médicament et une couche extérieure polymère pratiquement imperméable à la pénétration d'un liquide environnant et pratiquement imperméable à la libération du médicament pendant une période d'administration, la libération du médicament s'effectuant à travers un orifice situé dans cette couche extérieure. L'orifice de ces dispositifs présente une surface inférieure à 10 % de la surface totale du dispositif et on peut mettre en application ce dernier afin d'administrer une variété de médicaments comportant des degrés variables de solubilité ou de poids moléculaire. L'invention concerne également des procédés servant à utiliser ces dispositifs.
