Summary:The present invention relates to apparatus and methods for passing a patient's blood from his body to a location outside the body and then returning it to the patient, in a manner that reduces inflammation and reduces the dysfunction of the immune and hemostatic systems associated with extracorporeal circulation. In particular, the invention relates to the use of a low-prime cardiopulmonary bypass circuit to effect inhibition of injury to a patient's circulatory system, in order to accomplish such therapeutic prophylaxis.
