There is disclosed a method of inhibiting darkening, blackening or tarnishing of magnesium and magnesium alloys comprising contacting magnesium or a magnesium alloy with a fluid composition containing a composition in an amount effective to inhibit darkening, blackening or tarnishing of the surface of the magnesium or magnesium alloy at an effective pH, and metal compositions therefor. Also disclosed are aqueous metal working fluid compositions containing the compositions of the invention. La présente invention concerne un procédé d'inhibition de l'assombrissement, du noircissement ou du ternissement du magnésium et des alliages de magnésium, consistant à mettre en contact du magnésium ou un alliage de magnésium avec une composition fluide renfermant une composition en quantité suffisante pour inhiber l'assombrissement, le noircissement ou le ternissement de la surface du magnésium ou de l'alliage de magnésium à un pH suffisant, ainsi que des compositions métalliques de ceux-ci.
