Summary:Disclosed herein are systems, methods, and non-transitory computer-readable storage media for approximating video transmission quality capability through a communications network. Initially, a processor is used to insert data into the network through a first endpoint that is delivered to a second endpoint. Then, at least one characteristic of the network between the first and second endpoints is determined based on how the second endpoint receives the data. After the at least one characteristic is determined, a representative video segment is selected based on the at least one characteristic. Finally, the representative video segment is output to demonstrate the video transmission quality capabilities of the network.
