Summary:Described is a metal oxide support material containing nanoscaled iron-platinum group metal particles having a particle size in the range of 0.5 to 10 nm. At least 70% of the nanoscaled iron-platinum group metal particles are located on an outside surface layer of the metal oxide support material. The outside surface layer has an average volume of less than 50% based on the total volume of the metal oxide support material. Additionally, described is a process for preparation of metal oxide support materials containing nanoscaled iron-platinum group metal particles. Furthermore, described is the use of metal oxides containing nanoscaled iron-platinum group metal particles as catalysts, for example as a diesel oxidation catalyst for the treatment of exhaust gas emissions from a diesel engine.
