Summary:In an internal combustion engine, fuel is directly injected into at least one combustion chamber at least during a compression stroke in such a way that a stratified mixture is present in the combustion chamber. This mixture is then externally ignited. The fuel is introduced during the compression stroke by at least one main injection and an ignition injection, the ignition injection taking place immediately before an ignition and producing at least essentially no torque.
