Summary:An IPS-mode liquid-crystal display apparatus for controlling transmission and cutoff of light by applying a cross-directional electric field to liquid-crystal molecules horizontally oriented reduces diagonal luminance rise and coloring at the time of black display by a simple configuration. A configuration is used in which an optical phase compensation member for canceling the double refraction property of a polarization-plate support base material is provided between the liquid-crystal-layer-side support base material of a lower polarizer and a liquid-crystal layer. Or, a configuration is used in which the optical phase compensation for canceling double refraction property of the polarization-plate support base material is provided between the liquid-crystal-layer-side support base material and the liquid-crystal layer.
