Summary:A system and method for scaling a bus based on a location of a device on the bus are disclosed. An information handling system includes a host bridge interfaced between a local bus and a peripheral bus operable to run at a plurality of bus speeds generated by the host bridge. A plurality of expansion slots are coupled to the peripheral bus and a bus switch is coupled to the peripheral bus between at least two of the expansion slots. Control logic is interfaced with the host bridge and the expansion slots. The control logic is operable to enable at least one of the expansion slots based on a signal received from each of the expansion slots by manipulating the bus switches.
