Summary:An endoscopic optical system includes an elongate metal housing with a circular opening in its end in which a transparent window is received. The window has a cylindrical outer edge surface which is metallized over at least part of its area and is opposed to the cylindrical internal surface of the opening. An annular solder joint is provided in the gap between the opposed cylindrical surfaces. The solder joint has a thickness in the direction perpendicular to the window which is only a proportion of the thickness of the window.
