Summary:A process for the preparation of 1,2-benzisothiazoles of formula I (I) wherein X is in any one of the 4 possible positions of the benzene ring and is hydrogen, halogen, nitro, C1-C4alkoxy, halo-C1-C4alkoxy, C2-C4alkenyloxy or C2-C4alkynyloxy, in which process a compound of formula II (II) wherein X is as defined for formula I and R1 is hydrogen or an unsubstituted or substituted C1-C12hydrocarbon radical, is reacted in the presence of a catalytic amount of a strong acid. Compounds of formula I are known as pesticides, especially as nematicides. A process for the preparation of 1,2-benzisothiazoles of formula I (I) wherein X is in any one of the 4 possible positions of the benzene ring and is hydrogen, halogen, nitro, C1-C4alkoxy, halo-C1-C4alkoxy, C2-C4alkenyloxy or C2-C4alkynyloxy, in which process a compound of formula II a I and R1 is hydrogen or an unsubstituted or substituted C1-C12hydrocarbon radical, is reacted in the presence of a catalytic amount of a strong acid.
