Summary:A barcode symbol inclination detection unit detects the inclination angle of a barcode symbol on the basis of image information fetched by an image data fetching unit using, e.g., a linear sensor. A memory read/write control unit directly stores the image information fetched by the image data fetching unit in a memory unit, obliquely reads out the stored information along the detected inclination angle, and supplies readout data to a decoder unit. Alternatively, the memory read/write control unit obliquely writes the image information in the memory unit along the detected inclination angle to obtain information equivalent to that free from the inclination of the barcode symbol, simply reads out the stored information in the alignment direction of bars and spaces of the barcode symbol, and supplies readout data to the decoder unit.
