Summary:PCT No. PCT/JP92/01710 Sec. 371 Date Aug. 26, 1993 Sec. 102(e) Date Aug. 26, 1993 PCT Filed Dec. 25, 1992 PCT Pub. No. WO93/12863 PCT Pub. Date Jul. 8, 1993.A NOx absorbent (18) which absorbs the NOx when the air-fuel ratio of the exhaust gas flowing into the NOx absorbent (18) is lean and releases the absorbed NOx when the oxygen concentration of the exhaust gas flowing into the NOx absorbent (18) is lowered, is arranged in the exhaust passage of the engine. The amount of alkali metals, alkali-earth metals or rare-earth metals contained in the NOx absorbent (18) positioned on the downstream side, is made lower than the amount of alkali metals, alkali-earth metals or rare-earth metals contained in the NOx absorbent (18) positioned on the upstream side, to increase a reducing ability of the NOx absorbent (18) positioned on the downstream side as compared to the reducing ability of the NOx absorbent (18) positioned on the upstream side.
