Summary: | A process is provided for the preparation of an aqueous polymer dispersion which entails incorporating one or more divalent metals of magnesium, calcium or zinc in the form of an oxide, hydroxide, carbonate or bicarbonate, or in the form of a mixture of these basic salts into an aqueous starting dispersion containing a polymer A as the dispersed phase, an effective amount of an emulsifier and water as the remainder, at a temperature below the boiling point of pure water and above the glass transition point of the polymer A, wherein polymer A consists essentially of monomers, a) which are one or more alpha , beta -monoethylenically unstaturated mono- or di-carboxylic acids containing from 3 to 5 carbon atoms, an anhydride o these acids or a mixture thereof; and monomers b) being one or more other copolymerizable monomers. |
