Summary: | Process for the preparation of basic alkaline earth metal salts of organic carboxylic acids, which comprises (a) blending an oil-soluble alkyl salicylic acid with one or more long-chain hydrocarbon substituted derivatives of succinic acid or anhydride, in which the hydrocarbon substituent has a number average molecular weight from 120 to 5000, (b) mixing the blend of acid with more than an equivalent amount of an alkaline earth metal hydroxide and/or oxide in a hydrocarbon solvent; (c) introducing carbon dioxide into the mixture obtained in an amount of at least 0.5 equivalent carbon dioxide per equivalent of excess alkaline earth metal; and (d) removing residual solids, if any, and an aqueous layer, if any. |
