Summary: | Electrolytic cell and low-voltage method for sterilizing water. The electrolytic cell of the invention contains a cathode and an anode which produce oxidants to effect sterilization of contaminated water. The anode is made of a Group VIII metal or compound thereof which acts as a catalyst to produce oxidants. In the method of the invention, a salt solution is introduced into the electrolytic cell, oxidants are produced in solution, and the anode effluent stream is introduced directly into the water to be treated. |
