Preparation of 3-cyano-2-alkylalkanals

3-Cyanoaldehydes of the formula I I where R1 and R2 are each C1-C6-alkyl and R3 is hydrogen or C1-C3-alkyl, are prepared by a process wherein an aldehyde of the formula II II is reacted with anhydrous hydrocyanic acid in the presence of a basic catalyst, in a solvent.
