Summary:An incremental optical position sensing system utilizes a single laser beam and an out of focus grating which is between a pair of lenses whose focal planes coincide. The scanning laser beam passes through the first lens, scans the grating, passes through the second lens and impinges upon a pair of sensors. The phase correlation between the signals from the sensors is used to determine the direction of motion of the laser beam and an up/down counter is utilized to accumulate the absolute position of the beam.
