Summary:1465442 Modified carboxymethyl cellulose SCA DEVELOPMENT AB 15 May 1975 [17 May 1974] 20632/75 Heading C3A A modified carboxymethyl cellulose is prepared by reacting cellulose with a silicate, hydrogen peroxide and sodium monochloroacetate in the presence of ions of a metal which can exist in at least two oxidation states, the ions being in the lowest of them. Preferably the cellulose is alkali cellulose, the silicate sodium meta-silicate (particularly waterglass) and the metal ions supplied by ferrous chloride. The structure of the product is not clear, the nature of the silicon incorporation being uncertain. It is, however, more readily soluble than normal carboxymethyl cellulose and has good adhesive and film-forming properties.
