Summary:At least two horizontal perforated plates are vertically spaced. A powdered or granular carbonaceous substance is fed onto the lowermost of the perforated plates and, at the same time, a hot activating gas is introduced upwardly from below the lowermost horizontal perforated plate so that the activated portion of said powdered or granular carbonaceous substance is allowed to ascend to and form a fluidized bed on successively higher perforated plates. The activated carbon of the highest grade of quality collects on the uppermost perforated plate as the final product.
