Summary:1421808 Polyurethanes BAYER AG 3 Oct 1973 [3 Oct 1972] 46158/73 Heading C3R A polyurethane elastomer is obtained from (a) a polyol with an average M.Wt. of from 900-5300, (b) 4,41-dlisocyanato-diphenylmeth ane and (c) a glycol with a M.Wt. below 500 wherein (a) contains at least 40% wt. of a urethane of the formula wherein P represents a divalent group obtained by the removal of the OH or SH groups from a diol or dithiol of M.Wt. 700-1750, and Q represents a divalent aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, araliphatic, aromatic or heterocyclic group, but not The elastomer is prepared by reacting in a first reaction stage a diol of M.Wt. 700-1750 with from 0À2-0À7 equivalents of an aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, araliphatic, aromatic or heterocyclic diisocyanate other than component (b) to form as an intermediate product a urethane having terminal OH groups which is a component of a polyol mixture of M.Wt. 900-5300 and is present in a quantity up to 40% wt. of the polyol mixture, and in a second reaction stage reacting the polyol mixture with components b and c. The second reaction stage may be carried out as a one-shot or a prepolymer process. Catalysts, dyes, fillers, plasticizers and age resistors may be added to the reaction mixture, or to the elastomer before it is granulated. Lubricant and mould release waxes may also be added, e.g. fatty acid esters or amides, oxidized polyethylenes, other microcrystalline waxes and silicone oil. In the examples elastomers are prepared by first reacting (1) a polyester prepared from hexanediol or butanediol with tolylene diisocyanate, or (2) a polycaprolactone ester with hexamethylenediisocyanate, or (3) a polyester prepared from hexane-diol and adipic acid with 1-isocyanato-3,3,5-trimethyl-5-isocyanatocyclohexane, or (4) a butylene oxide polyether with tolylene diisocyanate, and then reacting the intermediate obtained with 4,41- diisocyanatodiphenylmethane and one of the following glycols: butane diol, hexanediol or diethylene glycol. Additives included in the reaction mixtures are 2,6-bis-(di-t-butylphenyl)- carbodiimide and silicone oil. The reaction mixtures were poured into moulds and then granulated. In one case chalk and oxidized polyethylene wax were added to the granulate. The granulate was then injection moulded or made into foils on melting and laminating rollers and directly bonded to textiles.
