Summary:1367025 Steroid sulphates MERCK PATENT GmbH 1 Jan 1973 [22 Jan 1972] 69/73 Heading C2U Novel steroids of the formula (wherein R1 is a cholestane or stigmastane side chain and R2 is H or R1 + R2 is a spirostane ring system, and R4 and R5 are both OSO 3 H or, in the spirostanes, they can also together represent #5-double bond) are prepared by direct sulphate ester formation from the corresponding mono- or tri-hydroxy steroids. They may subsequently be converted into salts. The novel sulphates and their salts are used in the treatment of hyperlipoproteinaemias, and they may be made up into pharmaceutical compositions with suitable carriers.
